Leading a World Class Training Organisation

This International Women’s Day (8 March, 2025), we are celebrating the many incredible women across St John who lead, support, and inspire those around them. Many of them also work on our frontlines – providing care and saving lives in times of illness, injury or distress.

Together, they represent 59% of our work and volunteer-force. Many wear our greens or many other hats across our network, with skills and experience in a variety of vocations – from paramedicine, to training, to health or wellbeing services, and management (among others). Their dedication and contributions are invaluable, and we are truly grateful for all that they do. One such staff member for our Australian Office is Jennifer – read her story below.

For nearly eight years, Jennifer Sorthi, St John Ambulance Australia’s RTO Manager, has been a driving force within the organisation. From her first day, filled with a mix of excitement and anticipation, to shaping the future of training and education, her journey has been one of growth, learning, and impact.

Jennifer shares with us a quote that she lives by, "Tell me, and I forget, teach me, and I may remember, involve me, and I learn." – Benjamin Franklin

Jennifer’s dedication to learning and leadership was most recently reflected in her participation in the first Global Leadership Programme, held in London November and December, 2025. Over two weeks, she connected with like-minded individuals from the global St John network, deepened her leadership skills, and embraced new perspectives to bring back to her team in Australia.

But for Jennifer, leadership isn’t just about personal growth—it’s about empowering others.

"Working as a woman in St John has been nothing short of inspiring. I have had the opportunity to lead, contribute, and drive meaningful change, and I am proud to be part of an organisation that truly values diversity and inclusion."

She recalls a defining moment in her career: leading a major project that tested her skills and confidence. The challenges were significant, but the unwavering support from her colleagues made all the difference.

“That experience reinforced that leadership isn’t about having all the answers—it’s about having the courage to step up, embrace the journey, lean on the support around you, and continue learning along the way.”

Now, Jennifer is passionate about paying it forward.

"Through this journey, I have formed incredible connections with people who have inspired and challenged me in the best possible ways. Now, I strive to do the same—supporting and encouraging women to step into leadership roles, embrace their strengths, and believe in their own potential."

“For me, St John has been more than just a workplace—it has been a place of trust, empowerment, and belonging. And for that, I will always be grateful.”

Brendan Maher, CEO of St John Ambulance Australia, echoes this sentiment and acknowledges the importance of all St John women and girls across out network:

"On this International Women’s Day, I want to express my gratitude to the incredible women of St John. Your dedication, leadership, and unwavering commitment to serving our communities make a profound impact every day. Your diverse skills, perspectives, and passion play a vital role in strengthening our organisation across Australia and help us deliver critical services and support to those in need. Today, we celebrate you and the invaluable role you play in building a stronger, resilient, and more inclusive St John. Thank you for everything you do."

Jennifer’s story is just one of many across St John, where women continue to lead, innovate, and inspire. Their contributions make an undeniable difference—not only within our organisation but in the lives of those we serve every day.
