Announcement of the death of the former Lord Prior, Professor Anthony Mellows OBE TD
It is with deep regret that I advise you of the passing of our former Lord Prior, Professor Anthony Mellows OBE TD, on Sunday 10 January after a very short spell in hospital. Professor Mellows was the Lord Prior from 2008 to 2014 and he made a wonderful, deep and lasting contribution to St John. Professor Mellows was a giant of a man in all respects— a gifted orator, a deep and wide thinker, a gracious guest and host, and a very generous supporter of our Order and many other charities. Above all he was a completely dedicated servant of the Order of St John, those who serve in it and all who it, in turn, serves.
Professor Mellows will be very sadly missed by so many people. His passing will be felt acutely by those who knew him well. However, that pales compared with the loss felt by his family and especially his wonderful wife, Elizabeth; his constant companion and support who herself is an incredibly hardworking and dedicated servant of the Order.
Those who know Elizabeth will want to contact her themselves; however, the St John International Office has been asked if those who might wish to speak directly to Elizabeth could delay telephoning for a few days. A private funeral will be held for Professor Mellows and a memorial service will be held at a later time.
Please include Tony, Elizabeth and all of their family and friends in your thoughts and prayers.
